What to do When Your Tooth Falls Out

What to do When Your Tooth Falls Out

DO NOT PANIC BUT ACT QUICKLY

In case your tooth has fallen out, you must do the following things at home before you can visit the nearest dentist.

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown portion (chewing surface) and not the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub it or wash it with soap or chemicals
  • If possible, try to reposition the tooth in the socket. Push the tooth in with your fingers by handling the crown portion and bite on it gently.
  • If the site is bleeding and the tooth cannot be positioned back, don’t worry, bite on a gauze piece or wet tea bag to control the bleeding.

One key thing to keep in mind is that the tooth must be kept moist at all times. In case you have not managed to re-position the tooth in the socket, then you can place it in a cup of distilled water or milk.

Keeping the tooth moist helps in preserving the periodontal ligament within which there are cells that help in re-attaching the tooth to the bone. It is these cells that need to be kept alive by keeping them moist.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOUR TOOTH CAN BE AND WILL BE SAVED. TRY VISITING A DENTIST WITHIN AN HOUR.
