Why are my teeth yellow when i brush them everyday?
If your teeth appear yellow even though you brush them daily, there could be several reasons for this discoloration. Here are some common factors that can cause yellowing of teeth despite regular brushing:
- Diet: Consuming foods and beverages that are highly pigmented, such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and dark-colored sauces, can lead to staining over time. These stains can accumulate on the enamel, making teeth appear yellow.
- Smoking and Tobacco Use: Smoking cigarettes or using tobacco products can lead to yellowing of teeth due to the nicotine and tar in these products.
- Aging: As you age, the outer layer of tooth enamel naturally wears down, revealing the yellowish dentin underneath. This is a normal part of the aging process and can contribute to yellowing teeth.
- Genetics: Some people may be genetically predisposed to have teeth that appear more yellow or discolored.
- Poor Oral Hygiene: Even if you brush your teeth daily, inadequate or improper brushing techniques may not effectively remove all the plaque and stains from the surface of your teeth.
- Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions and medications can affect the color of your teeth. For example, certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline, can cause permanent tooth discoloration if taken during tooth development.
- Fluorosis: Excessive exposure to fluoride during tooth development (usually in childhood) can lead to tooth discoloration. This is more common in areas with high fluoride levels in the water.
- Trauma: Trauma to a tooth, such as a fall or injury, can cause the tooth to darken or yellow over time.
- Enamel Erosion: Acidic foods and drinks, as well as conditions like acid reflux, can erode tooth enamel, making the dentin layer underneath more visible and causing teeth to appear yellow.
- Bruxism (Teeth Grinding): Grinding your teeth can wear down the enamel and expose the dentin, which can make your teeth look yellow.
To address yellowing teeth, consider the following steps:
- Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Consider using a whitening toothpaste that can help remove surface stains.
- Limit Stain-Causing Foods and Beverages: Reduce your consumption of foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. If you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water afterward.
- Quit Smoking: If you smoke or use tobacco products, quitting can help prevent further yellowing of your teeth.
- Professional Teeth Whitening: Consider professional teeth whitening treatments offered by dentists. These treatments can effectively remove stains and brighten your smile.
- Consult a Dentist: If your teeth continue to appear yellow despite your efforts, it's advisable to consult a dentist. They can assess the cause of the discoloration and recommend appropriate treatments, such as dental bonding, veneers, or other cosmetic procedures.
